Assurance of Salvation in the Westminster Confession: Can You Know You Are Saved?

Can a Christian know, in this life, that he or she is truly saved? The Roman Catholic Church answered: no — certainty of salvation is the sin of presumption. Much of modern evangelicalism answers: yes, automatically, the moment you pray a prayer. The Westminster Confession charts a careful course between these two errors in Chapter 18, 'Of the Assurance of Grace and Salvation.'
Assurance Is Possible
The Confession affirms clearly that genuine, infallible assurance is possible in this life: 'Such as truly believe in the Lord Jesus, and love Him in sincerity, endeavouring to walk in all good conscience before Him, may, in this life, be certainly assured that they are in the state of grace.' This assurance is not presumption — it is a gift of God grounded in the promises of Scripture, the inward evidence of grace in one’s life, and the testimony of the Holy Spirit.
But Not Automatic
At the same time, the Confession does not teach that assurance is the immediate possession of every believer. 'A true believer may wait long, and conflict with many difficulties before he be partaker of it.' Assurance may be shaken, diminished, or intermitted through sin, temptation, or the withdrawal of God’s felt presence — yet never to the point of utter despair for the truly regenerate. The Confession distinguishes between saving faith (which may be weak) and full assurance (which may be absent for a season).
The Pastoral Wisdom of Chapter 18
What makes this chapter so pastorally valuable is its realism. It does not promise a perpetual emotional certainty that many believers never experience. It does not leave the struggling saint with no comfort at all. It says: genuine assurance is possible, is worth pursuing, is grounded in objective realities (the promises of God, the work of Christ), and is confirmed by the Spirit’s inward testimony. For the believer who wonders whether he or she is truly saved, Chapter 18 is one of the most helpful sections in the entire Confession.
