Study Notes

Structure

Thirty-three chapters covering the entire scope of Reformed theology — from Scripture, God, and creation through providence, the covenant of grace, salvation, the church, the sacraments, and the last things. Each chapter is systematically argued and extensively supported by Scripture proof texts.

Purpose

Produced by the Westminster Assembly (1643–1649) at the direction of the English Parliament to provide a comprehensive confessional standard for a thoroughly reformed church in England, Scotland, and Ireland — the most detailed theological achievement of the Puritan era.

Usage

The primary confessional standard of Presbyterian churches worldwide. The Larger and Shorter Catechisms, produced alongside it, are used for instruction, examination, and ordination in Presbyterian congregations from Scotland to South Korea to sub-Saharan Africa.

Influence

The most detailed and precise confession in the Reformed tradition, it shaped Presbyterian theology for nearly 400 years and remains the doctrinal standard of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC), and many international Reformed bodies.
